Union alarm as mining giant mulls sick leave overhaul

A union claims that thousands of iron ore workers can interrupt the right to illness permission.
The Australian Production Workers ‘Association said that Rio Tinto proposes a number of changes in the illness permit policy, including reducing workers’ authority to 12 days a year.
Amwu State Secretary Steve McCartney said that the proposals are necessary to provide serious concerns for the workers and the mining giant to provide more information.
“Rio Tinto begins with the rights of the workers’ illness permission – but who will say that the joinery block is not wages and wider conditions?” he said.
“It will be solid to defend the rights of our members of the Union.”
The Union said that the workers told them that Rio Tinto did not provide enough details about the proposed changes.
“This is not good enough, Mr. Mr McCartney said.
“We will support them at every step to ensure that they are protected during this process.”
According to the union, the reviewed policy contains 10 -day illness permission and two days more days a year, which accrues annually
He said that workers can get a annual payment of $ 1000 for healthy living programs.
“This is a warning for all employees and contractors – if a company like Rio Tinto can unilaterally change permission, it can easily move on payment and other conditions, Mc said McCartney.
Rio Tinto said that his employees and caregivers were consulting on the changes allowed for iron ore work.
A spokesman said, “The security and prosperity of our people is our greatest priority,” he said.
“When requested by feedback from our Folk Survey, we review the patient and the caregiver’s permission policy for the Rio Tinto Iron ore.”
The company said the proposed changes are designed to provide justice for all employees.
“This includes full wage permission, including the appropriations, in case of serious illness or injury that we believe in industrial leadership for up to 12 months,” he said.
The Rio Tinto Iron ore employs about 16,000 people.
Pursuant to national employment standards, full -time employees have the right to obtain 10 -day illness permission each year.
