Protesters target Indonesia’s parliament over MP pay

Police fired tear gas and water balls to push hundreds of demonstrators trying to enter the Indonesian Parliament building to protest against excessive wages and advantage for legislators.
Some protesters covered with dark clothes threw fireworks at the Riot Police in the capital Jakarta on Monday.
At least one motorcycle flares by protesters, but the authorities did not give any damage, loss or arrest details.
The protesters marched on the streets around the Parliament building, according to Gejayan Memangil, one of the groups organized by students in Yogyakarta states in the state of Yogyakarta.
This month, local media, parliamentarians, including an important housing allowance, including 100 million Rupiah (A9.500 $) said.
While Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia, this fee is far above the average revenue in the archipelago of 3.1 million Rupia.
The demonstrators also protested against what they call “corrupt elite” within the government, and the press release clearly referred to the army’s increasing role under President Prabowo Subio, an old general in civilian life.
Some were seen on television images carrying a flag from the Japanese manga series One Piece, which has become a symbol of protest against government policies in the country.
Jakarta police spokesman Ade Ary Syam Indradi said that 1250 police staff were deployed to protect security around the building.
