On Wednesday, September 4, 2025, the Maharashtra cabinet has approved the laws to increase the maximum daily working hours existing for private sector employees between nine to 10 hours.
In an official statement, the movement aims to invest in investment, create employment and protect workers’ rights.
During the meeting, headed by Prime Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the State Minister cleared the changes proposed by a central task force by bringing Maharashtra in accordance with the states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, TaLantgana, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Tripura.
The changes, 1948 and Maharashtra stores and organizations (employment and service conditions regulation) will be made in 2017, he said.
Ensure the appropriate overtime compensation
Changes allow industries to function during the intense demand or labor shortage, while the workers will receive appropriate overtime compensation.
However, the limit of daily working hours in industries increases from nine to 12 hours, while rest breaks will be allowed to rest after five. The legal overtime limit will increase 115 to 144 hours per quarter with the compulsory written consent of the workers. He said that the weekly working hours will be extended from 10.5 hours to 12 hours.
Similarly, in accordance with the law of modified stores and organizations, daily working hours will be increased from nine to 10, and more than 125 to 144 hours of overtime limits and emergency duty hours will be extended to 12. Changes will be valid for organizations with 20 or more workers.
Organizations employing less than 20 workers will no longer need a registration certificate, but they should inform the authorities through a simple sincerity process.
According to the government, the movement is expected to facilitate the ease of doing business, to attract new investments, to encourage employment creation, and at the same time to provide wage protection and improved rights for workers, including double payment for overtime.
The State Ministry of Labor presented the proposal to the Cabinet last week. The department argued that the proposed changes would provide a more comfortable working environment, especially for women, and that both employees and employers will deal with the long -standing concerns.
