More than 100 days ago, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy attended the pre-Christmas celebrations organized by the State Government, where he announced plans to legislate on hate speech, similar to the law passed by Karnataka to punish those who insult other religions.
Keeping his word, the Prime Minister ensured the enactment of the Telangana Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention) Bill (2026) during the Budget Session of the State Legislative Assembly on March 30, 2026. It was introduced to the Parliament by Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar. Although the government’s aim is to ensure respect for all faiths and to firmly combat attempts to disrupt social harmony, the applicable parts of the Bill have sparked intense debate.
