Adam Ramsay-Peaty snubs his estranged family while paying tribute to his wife Holly for supporting him during ‘whirlwind’ 24 hours as she watches him reach 50m breaststroke final after 100m heartbreak

After missing out on gold in the 100m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games, Adam Ramsay-Peaty paid tribute to his wife Holly, who supported him through the 24-hour ‘whirlwind’.

The Olympian returned to the pool on Sunday evening to compete in the 50m breaststroke semi-final, with his pregnant wife looking on with pride as he finished second to book himself a place in the final race on Monday night.

Following his 100m loss, Adam broke down in tears in an emotional interview in which he took aim at his estranged family and said the negativity he had with them was ‘damaging’.

However, the swimmer said his performance was ‘much better’ during the 50m dash, and in his post-race interview he was asked who he turned to for support as he tried to recover from the 100m swim.

The swimmer did not mention his family and instead praised Holly, who is pregnant with her first child, and close friends for being there for him.

Holly watched Adam swim in the 50m breaststroke semi-final and the swimmer finished second to book himself a place in Monday’s final.

The man said: ‘The last 24 hours have been a bit stormy, nothing I’m used to.

“But I guess in sport it’s not about when you get beat because it’s inevitable, you have to do it, you have to make mistakes, how you look at it, perspective, you have to turn it around for tonight and I’m really happy for that.” ‘We’re on a great track for tomorrow.’

When asked who he relied on for support, Adam continued: ‘There were a lot of people I talked to; Of course my wife, my coach, my best friend Ed. You have your friends, you have your teammates.

‘The best way to get everything out of my head is to just write; I write down what went wrong, what went right, what I can change, what I can’t change, and then I have a battle plan.

‘ I can take it tomorrow saying ‘That’s right, I can do this’. Even now I’m wondering what part of this battle plan was.’

The man burst into tears as he finished third in the 100-meter breaststroke final on Saturday night and returned home with the bronze medal.

In an interview following his defeat, Adam acknowledged the family feud and said it was “damaging”.

“It’s hard because I know how hard I work,” the man cried. ‘I know what I’ve been through, it’s not my fault. ‘There’s a price for this.’

The roots of the family conflict date back to 2024, when Adam and Holly snubbed extended members of the Peaty family by not inviting them to their engagement party and wedding.

While the man was returning to the pool for the semi-finals, the expectant mother was in the stands.

Holly wore an all-black look as she entered the race, with Adam praising her for supporting him after he missed out on the 100m win.

Reports of his strained relationship with his family clearly took their toll on Adam, who was overcome with emotion after the outcome.

In her post-swim interview, she added: ‘I’m never afraid to show my emotions. This is important because it helps create stronger people, stronger men, stronger fathers and stronger husbands.

‘Especially this cycle I worked harder than ever. It hurts to get a result like that because I know I’m better than this.

‘It’s still very raw. Frankly, I feel like I deserve more. There is much to be done, but it is too early to draw any conclusions.

‘Maybe it was just a swim. Maybe it’s because I’ve been away from championship racing for two years. I really don’t know.

‘What’s the point of starting at 5.30? What’s the point of measuring every day? What’s the point of being constantly exhausted or missing family events because you have to train?

‘This must mean something. For me, that means striving for perfection, and today it wasn’t perfection. This is where the emotion comes from.

‘The choices I’ve made over the last few months have been difficult. I’m also proud that I came here and didn’t give up after Paris. [Olympics in 2024]. I know I deserve more and I know I can work for it.

‘It’s been two years since I’ve competed in the heats, semi-finals and finals, so maybe this is just an adjustment. It’s too early to know what I’m capable of at this stage, but I’m a warrior.

‘We have another opportunity at the Europeans in two weeks and I’m really enjoying seizing it. I lost that crumb today, but it’s a sport. Many times I won these battles, but not this time.’

He continued: ‘Over the last few months I have had to make some difficult decisions to focus on my work.

‘I’ve had to ignore a lot of the nonsense people write online. That’s enough. This goes beyond sports. It’s about being a decent human being. We all must do better.

Adam cut ties with his parents last year following a dispute that began when extended members of his family were not invited to his wife Holly’s hen party.

‘My wife will always be proud of me. It doesn’t matter if you come home with a gold medal or not, as long as you come home as a father. That’s what really matters.”

It is the final blow to his estranged loved ones when Adam changes his name to Ramsay-Peaty and registers for the Games in Glasgow with his double-barreled surname; especially since Ramsay was first in line before Peaty.

A source previously said: ‘Adam may be rich, but we have something he doesn’t: brains, loyalty, honesty and family.

‘Money is good for a cold bedfellow. It can’t hold you tight when things go wrong or you’re having a bad day.’

18-year-old Filip Nowacki from Jersey took second place, 0.31 seconds behind world record holder Ramsay-Peaty, while the gold went to Australian Sam Williamson.
