Amaravati gains legal status as capital; Andhra Pradesh leaders hail ‘historic victory’

In a landmark development for Andhra Pradesh, the long-awaited dream of establishing Amaravati as the state’s capital has received a firm boost after the UN nod to Droupadi Murmu. Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Act, 2026. This move officially gave Amaravati legal backing as the capital and marked an important milestone in the state’s political and administrative journey.
Welcoming the development, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep gratitude to the President for his approval, describing it as the fulfillment of a long-desired wish of the people. He also thanked the Union Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its continuous support and guidance in implementing the legislation.
Mr. Naidu expressed his appreciation to the State leaders and citizens who stood united on the issue, as well as to the Members of Parliament who supported the Bill. Highlighting the emotional and economic significance of the moment, he termed this development as a “victory for the people of Andhra Pradesh” and gave special appreciation to Amaravati farmers who played a crucial role with their sacrifices and continuous support.

Echoing similar sentiments, Andhra Pradesh Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh termed the day historic for every citizen of the state. He noted that the President’s approval transforms the long-standing vision of Amaravati into a concrete reality.
Mr. Lokesh thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his vision and commitment towards the future of Andhra Pradesh and appreciated the collective efforts of the Members of Parliament in ensuring the passage of the Bill. He paid special tribute to the farmers of Amaravati and stated that their patience, resilience and sacrifice were instrumental in achieving this milestone.
Andhra Pradesh BJP chief PVN Madhav welcomed the latest development regarding Amaravati and stated that President Droupadi Murmu’s assent and gazette notification to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2026 ensures permanent recognition of Amaravati as the state capital. He described it as an important and joyful moment for the people of Andhra Pradesh.
Reiterating the BJP’s commitment to the progress of the state, Madhav said the party will continue to work in coordination with alliance partners to ensure sustainable development and stability in Andhra Pradesh.
