An American Airlines flight bound for Bermuda canceled takeoff from Miami International Airport on Friday after a business jet crossed the active runway, bringing the planes about a third of a mile apart.

While traffic on the runways was moving on commands from the air traffic controller (ATC), a catastrophic accident was averted by alert pilots using visual verification in the AA cockpit and without relying on instrumentation.

“After clearance, American Airlines Flight 308 aborted takeoff after the crew observed another aircraft on the runway,” American Airlines said in a statement to Fox News Digital. he said. “We appreciate the prompt action of our crew members and thank our customers for their understanding.”

“You just crossed an active runway,” an ATC agent told the business jet pilot around 6 p.m. after the incident.

“You just told me to cross the runway, sir,” the pilot replied.

While the ATC voice confirmed that the American Airlines flight had received clearance to take off from runway eight in Miami, the NetJets Flight EJA434 business jet, reportedly operated by a third-party maintenance provider, mistakenly believed that the clearance from ATC was intended to do so.

“RNAV Jamba 8R ready for takeoff American 308,” an air traffic controller instructed.

“Amerijet 461, pass left of runway eight, stop near runway eight on the right,” another said.

“Four Quebec Sierras, you just crossed an active runway: Stay close to the eighth runway on the left,” urged another.

A NetJets spokesperson told Fox News Digital that “EJA434 was not under NetJets’ operational control at the time of the encounter.”
