Andy Burnham becomes UK prime minister after meeting King Charles | Labour

Andy Burnham officially became prime minister of the United Kingdom after meeting King Charles at Buckingham Palace; He became the fourth person to hold the post in less than four years and the sixth person in a decade.

Burnham, who took over the leadership of the Labor Party from Keir Starmer on Friday, accepted the appointment as prime minister shortly after Starmer went to the palace to resign as ruler.

The former Greater Manchester mayor, who returned to Parliament just a month ago, will now travel to Downing Street where he will make a statement to the assembled media before announcing his cabinet.

After the incumbent prime minister lost the support of many Labor MPs and some of his ministers following a series of political setbacks and U-turns, Burnham returned to parliament in a by-election expressly organized by his allies in a bid to replace Starmer.

With no one else in the party vying to become leader, Burnham was elected prime minister without any contest and with limited scrutiny.

The same is true for Rishi Sunak in 2022, although he had struggled against Liz Truss weeks earlier and has very new cabinet experience.

Although Burnham has previously served as an MP and cabinet minister, he left parliament in 2017 to take on the Greater Manchester role.
