Anthony Albanese pushes back at Donald Trump’s claim Australia said ‘no’ to involvement in Iran war

Anthony Albanese has disputed Donald Trump’s claim that Australia said “no” to the President’s request to “get involved” in the war in Iran.

The US President made this statement on Friday US time but did not provide details of the request.

“Well, they have to participate, and I’m a little surprised they said no, because we always tell them yes,” the president told a media group in Washington.

On Saturday, the Prime Minister disputed Mr Trump’s claims.

“The fact is that we said yes to BAE’s request for the E7 Wedgetail aircraft,” Mr Albanese said. he said.

“We continue to provide the support requested from us”

When a journalist began to ask, “If the President asks…” Mr. Albanese immediately interrupted.

“Well, (Trump) didn’t ask, so I’m not going to make assumptions. We did what was asked of us.”

Mr Albanese reiterated a promise he made immediately after his election that he would not comment on everything the US President said.

He also called on the Iranian military to stop the attacks.

“We once again call on the Iranian regime to stop its attacks, whether against the economic foundations of global trade or against our 12 neighbors,” Albanese said.

“It’s hard to understand what their strategy is other than to alienate the Iranian regime from all of its neighbors.”

Australia sent heavy-duty Air Force surveillance aircraft and missile defense systems to the UAE at the request of the Emirates.
