Anzac Day: Thousands expected to gather at services across Perth to commemorate veterans on Saturday

More than 100 Anzac Day ceremonies will be held in Western Australia on Saturday to commemorate the 111th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.

The services will provide local people with the opportunity to pay their respects to the men and women who served and died in conflicts, wars and peacekeeping missions.

Events in the City of Perth include the all-abilities sunset service, the Kings Park dawn service, the Anzac Day parade in the CBD, the cathedral service and the gun breakfast in the Government House gardens.

More than 25,000 people are expected to attend the Kings Park Anzac Day dawn service.

Brigadier Damian Bushell of the Australian Army will deliver the tribute and Wing Commander Michael Moroney of the Royal Australian Air Force will address the park’s sunset ceremony.

North of Perth, the City of Joondalup invites people to attend one of Perth’s largest dawn services at Joondalup’s Central Park mausoleum.

The ceremony, which unites the community in remembrance and gratitude, will include a wreath-laying ceremony, a traditional minute’s silence and the playing of the Last Message.

Joondalup mayor Daniel Kingston said the day was “a moment for all of us to pause and reflect on the extraordinary courage, sacrifice and resilience of those who serve our nation”.

“It is gratifying to see people of all ages come together in Central Park to honor soldiers, hear their stories, and reflect on their sacrifices that remain a permanent part of our national identity.”

City of Wanneroo Mayor Linda Aitken echoed Mr Kingston’s sentiments, saying Anzac Day provided an important opportunity for the community to come together and reflect.

“Anzac Day is one of the most important days in our national calendar as we honor the brave Australian and New Zealand Forces who served at Gallipoli and all those who have served our country since,” he said.

“It is time to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of our soldiers and women, past and present.”
