An Arizona school board member is facing calls to resign after giving a Nazi salute during a contentious public meeting and later comparing the board president to a dictator and saying, “The only thing I could think of tonight was Hitler.”

According to video of the meeting, Fisher opposed holding the session in the afternoon, arguing that community members would have difficulty participating.

“The whole point of having a working session with our community is so we can get their input and they can hear our discussions,” Fisher said during the meeting.

Carver later said he wanted to adjourn the meeting because the discussion included an item not on the agenda that could raise concerns under Arizona’s Open Meetings Act.

“The reason for the adjournment call was that as the issue escalated into a discussion of a non-agenda item, the board was moving into territory that could be considered a violation of Arizona’s Open Meetings Act,” Carver said in a video posted on Facebook after the meeting. he said.

The incident drew condemnation from district officials, who said Fisher acted independently and did not represent the district’s views.

In a separate video posted on social media, Carver said community members asked why the board didn’t take action against Fisher. He argued that Arizona law limits school boards’ ability to discipline elected members.

“I want the community to understand that in the state of Arizona, the school district and board do not have the authority to discipline board members,” Carver said.

Carver called Fisher’s behavior “pervasive and repetitive” and said his actions were “completely unacceptable and unprofessional.”
