Armed police shoot motorist, 20, who drove directly at them while trying to flee

Armed police shot dead a fleeing motorist who drove straight at them after failing to stop.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) attempted to stop the driver on Bury New Road in Whitefield, Bury, at around 3pm today.

Police said the ‘car did not stop and drove directly at our officers in an attempt to escape’ and in response a firearms officer opened fire.

While the driver of the car, who was injured in his arm, was taken to the hospital, it was stated that the situation was not life-threatening and was not life-threatening.

Forensic officers are seen attending the scene, where an off-white car was boxed in by other unmarked cars behind a police cordon.

Police reported that no police officer was injured in the incident and the investigation is ongoing.

A 20-year-old white British man was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the supply of Class A drugs.

GMP said the incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct ‘in accordance with standard procedure’.

Detective Superintendent Joe Harrop, from our Serious Crime Section, said: ‘We know people in the area will be concerned about what is happening and the visible increase in police officers in the local area as our investigations continue.

‘Thankfully no members of the public or officers were harmed in this afternoon’s incident and we thank people for their patience while we remained at the scene.

‘If anyone has any concerns please speak to our officers in the local area. They’re there to listen and help wherever possible.’
