Arne Slot says he’s leaving Liverpool After being sacked as head coach on Saturday, he is “exactly where he belongs: among Europe’s elite”.
The 47-year-old Dutchman won the Premier League title in his first season but was sacked by the club hierarchy after the Reds finished fifth in the league this season, 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
Liverpool will begin formal talks this week with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola over becoming their new head coach.
In an emotional open letter published in the magazine Liverpool Echo, externalSlot said his fans welcomed him from the very beginning and helped him along the way. “This is something I value,” he added.
“I leave with full confidence in what lies ahead.
“The players who gave so much to this club, upheld its values and helped create unforgettable moments, built lasting foundations.”
Despite suffering 20 defeats in all competitions, Slot secured Liverpool’s place in next season’s Champions League.
“Securing Champions League football was a significant responsibility and one that will ensure Liverpool continue to compete at the highest level next season and beyond,” he added.
“Change is part of football but I know this club will continue to make its people proud.
“When I first stood under that sign in the Anfield tunnel I knew what this club wanted. I leave knowing that we never stopped striving for it.”
