Weather models show temperatures in the UK could soon rise above the official heatwave threshold for three consecutive days, with the mercury potentially reaching 32C.

Met Office forecasters are warning that the likelihood of a heatwave will increase in the coming months, with another one on the horizon following last month’s sweltering conditions when temperatures soared to 35.1°C in May, the hottest temperature ever recorded.

The GFS weather model predicts temperatures will start to rise on June 17, with temperatures reaching 28°C in the south-east, 27°C in East Anglia, 26°C in the north-west and Midlands and 24°C in North Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to stay slightly cooler, according to the data.

Graphs show temperatures could reach 30C in the south-east and 29C as far north as Yorkshire on June 18. Parts of Northern Ireland could even reach 26C, while Wales looks set to settle firmly in the mid-to-high 20s.

The most intense heat is expected to be seen on June 19. The GFS model suggests temperatures of 30C or above are possible across much of England, while the mercury could potentially rise to 27C in areas of southern Scotland. The south-east of England is again predicted to be the hottest region, with temperatures of 32 degrees possible.

In total, the data reveals 13 counties, all across England, could experience temperatures of 31 degrees or higher on June 19.

Weather models show Britain facing new heatwave

If the data this GFS model shows comes true, this would represent another official heat wave, at least in certain parts of the country.

An official heatwave is declared when temperatures rise above the heatwave threshold for three consecutive days. The heatwave threshold varies between 25C and 28C in different counties in England. In the southeast, where temperatures are warmer, the temperature is at 28C and decreases to 25C as you move away from the southeast.

This GFS model data shows that from June 17 to June 19, temperatures reached 28°C, 30°C, and then 32°C in the same regions; This means this could officially qualify as a heatwave.

Weather forecast for June from Meteorology

The Met Office’s latest forecast for the second half of this month suggests southern areas could soon experience “hot” conditions. But “thunderstorms” are also possible.

The forecast (covering 18 June – 2 July) states: “The start of the period is likely to be relatively clear, with high pressure around the UK bringing drier conditions to most parts of the UK.

“However, some showers or showers are still possible. Winds will be mostly light and temperatures will likely be above normal. Towards the end of June, low pressure may start to have more impact, especially in the south, where heavy showers and thunderstorms become more likely. It may also be hot in parts of the south.”
