Slain Loyola student Sheridan Gorman’s mom vows ‘fight for justice’ at vigil

The mother of slain college student Sheridan Gorman is speaking out, vowing to “fight for justice” after the 18-year-old was allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant in Chicago earlier this month.

Jessica Gorman made emotional remarks Saturday at a vigil in Yorktown Heights, New York, in memory of her daughter, a Loyola University Chicago freshman whose life was cut short in what authorities described as a sudden, violent attack.

“As a mother, I want to say this gently but honestly. I am furious,” Jessica Gorman said. “I feel completely heartbroken and we will fight for justice and we will fight for change for our sweet Sheridan.”

While Jessica Gorman acknowledged that “not everyone” will see it the same way, she emphasized what she described as a universal truth that parents share.

“At the core of all of this, we all want the same thing: for your children and our children to be safe, protected and to come home,” Jessica Gorman said. he said. “Because at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. All of our children, every single one of them, protecting them, loving them, supporting them. That’s how we honor him.”

Sheridan Gorman, a New York native, was killed around 1:06 a.m. on March 19 while she was with friends near a pier in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood.

Authorities allege that Venezuelan illegal immigrant Jose Medina-Medina (25) shot a Loyola University student in Chicago with a single shot, killing him.

Gorman is reportedly just a few months away from completing his freshman year.

Medina-Medina was captured by the US Border Patrol on May 9, 2023, and released to the US under the Biden administration, according to data from the Department of Homeland Security.

During the vigil, the family’s attorney, Thomas Tripodianos, warned of what he described as growing complacency about public safety.

“If we accept this, even quietly, we would be accepting the fact that young people are not as safe as they should be, and that is unacceptable,” Tripodianos said. he said. “And there must be justice. Real justice.”

Family members and friends also shared memories of Sheridan, remembering the impact he had on those around him.

“Sheridan, you are well-liked at Loyola,” said Steven Betancourt, director of campus ministry at Loyola University Chicago. “You are sorely missed and will continue to live on in the lives you touched and changed forever.”

The Gorman family harshly criticized Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, arguing that their daughter’s death “requires responsibility.”

“He was doing something completely normal; he was walking near his campus with friends. He should have been here,” the Gorman family said of Johnson’s comments.

It was stated that the suspect was brought to court on Friday and it was decided to continue his detention. FOX 32 Chicago.

He faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon.
