‘Portland icon’ Lloyd Center slated for demolition later in 2026, renderings reveal what could replace it

PORTLAND, ore. (KOIN) — If you’re looking to take one last spin at the Lloyd Center’s indoor ice rink, you might want to get there ASAP.

A. Construction of a new concert hall is underway on the site of the old Nordstrom store at the Lloyd Center. Now KOIN 6 has learned that plans to demolish the remainder of the mall property are moving forward this week.

There were only a few people at Lloyd Center mall on Tuesday as only a few stores were still open. When the mall opened in 1960, it was one of the largest in the country and featured the first indoor mall ice rink in the United States.

“It was a Portland icon. It was part of Portland history,” said Oregon Historical Society Executive Director Kerry Tymchuk. “This was a performance venue… It was part of Portland’s DNA for many years.”

Despite efforts to save the mall, the current owners of the 29-acre property will submit plans to demolish it to the Portland Design Review Committee.

The plan covers thousands of residences, offices, shops, streets and park areas.

Tom Kilburn from Urban Renaissance Group said, “It will be a brand new neighborhood. We have a 30-acre area here. We foresee new streets, new open spaces. There will be retail buildings. There will be thousands of units of new housing. It will be a vibrant new neighborhood that will take shape here for the next 10 years or so.”

The mall is expected to be demolished later this summer, and later this week the owners of Lloyd Center will review their plans with the City of Portland.
