US military identifies third service member killed in Iranian attack on Jordan base | US military
The US military has confirmed that a third service member is believed to have been killed in an attack on a base in Jordan on Friday, identifying him as Sergeant Angel S Rampersad, 28, of New York.
The confirmation puts the death toll at 18 US soldiers killed since the war began.
On Monday, the Pentagon identified 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, and Pvt Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Carrollton, Texas, as the other two soldiers killed in Jordan in Friday’s attacks. Soldiers were killed by Iranian ballistic missile and drone strikes in the first troop deaths resulting from direct Iranian fire since the early days of the war. A statement from the US central command stated that these men were deployed to support a US mission against the Islamic State group.
After the attack, the US central command announced that two soldiers were killed and another was missing. The next day, the military command said that soldiers had found unidentified remains and that the examination process was ongoing to confirm the remains.
Now the Pentagon says Rampersad is believed to be the missing soldier and his official status is now “Duty Status-Presence Unknown” and that he is “believed dead.”
Rampersad belonged to the same unit as Gonzales, the 10th Army Air + Missile Defense Command, based in Ansbach, Germany.
Another U.S. soldier killed in a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone in Iraq has been identified as Sergeant Michael Emmanuel Swinton, a 30-year-old father from North Carolina who served for nearly a decade, according to a military statement and his family.
The renewed conflict between the US and Iran is now in its 10th day, with both sides raining down attacks. Iran attacked US allies in the region and American soldiers were deployed to the Middle East.
Iranian officials say at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in US attacks over the past three weeks.
Both sides targeted civilian infrastructure that millions of people rely on. In addition to the workers on the ships, foreign workers and other workers in the Gulf countries, Israel and Lebanon also lost their lives in the conflict.
