Asda trials new ticket system for some products to curb shoplifting | UK | News

Asda is considering installing vending machines for items such as razors in a bid to combat a rise in shoplifting. It is understood the offering will build on a trial at the retailer’s Ashton-under-Lyne store in Greater Manchester, which is already using similar machines for products such as vapes and cigarettes.

Under the system, shoppers will select an item via a touch screen and receive a ticket to be presented at checkout for payment.

Once the transaction is completed, the customer will be given a second ticket to activate the vending machine and release the product.

According to Retail Customer Experience, company officials are in talks about expanding the program to other high-risk goods, but no final decision has been made yet.

Since the trial is ongoing, it appears that a wider rollout is not expected in the near term.

Retailers across the country are investing significantly in loss prevention measures.

According to figures from the British Retail Consortium, 5.5 million thefts were recorded across the country last year. This cost approximately $542 million, but the actual figure is likely to be considerably higher due to widespread underreporting.

Supermarkets have spent more than $6.77 billion on safety improvements over the past five years.

These upgrades include expanded CCTV networks and increased numbers of in-store security personnel.

Popular bakery chain Greggs has launched a major overhaul at some of its outlets in a bid to combat theft.

The high street favorite has installed self-service fridges and shelving behind the counter in a major change to selected locations in a bid to deter thieves.

As a result, customers in high-risk areas will no longer be able to grab themselves a sandwich or drink before heading to the till. Instead, staff will retrieve items from behind the counter, where only employees have access.
