Assam polls: BJP’s 4.6 percentage points rise in vote share results in gain of 22 seats

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 102 seats, the highest ever, well ahead of the half-mark of 64 in the 126-member Assam Assembly.
According to information shared by the Election Commission, the ruling BJP won 37.81 percent of the total votes cast in 2026, corresponding to 82 wins. In 2021, when it won 60 seats, its vote share was 33.21 percent.
The Opposition Congress’ vote share rose to 29.84 percent this year from 29.67 percent five years ago, but the number of MLAs fell from 29 to 19 in the outgoing Assembly.
The vote share of the BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) fell to 6.47 per cent from 7.91 per cent in 2021, but it increased its MLA tally by one to have 10 MLAs this time.
The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), another ally of the ruling NDA, was on course to win 10 seats with 3.73 per cent of the total votes. It had won four seats in 2021, but the EC had not separately shown its vote share in 2021. In the opposition camp, AIUDF saw its vote share fall to 5.46 per cent as it won just two seats. In 2021, it had 16 MLAs and 9.29 percent vote share.
According to EC data, this time 1.23 percent of voters chose the None of the Above (NOTA) option; This is a very small increase from the 1.14 percent of voters who chose this option five years ago.
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha failed to win any seats but managed to get 1.16 per cent vote share this time, signaling the party’s expansion towards the Northeast.
The EC said that the vote rate in the ‘others’ category, which includes all other competing parties and candidates, was 10.17 percent. In 2021, this rate was 13.7 percent.
In the results announced on Monday, the ruling BJP won 82 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly, while its allies BPF and AGP won 10 seats each.
The Congress and Raijor Dal, which are part of the six-party opposition alliance, won 19 and two seats respectively. AIUDF and Trinamool Congress have fought separately as a single entity and will have two and one MLA respectively in the new Assembly.
Among the total 722 candidates, Congress had the highest number of 99 candidates, followed by BJP with 90 candidates, AIUDF 30, AGP 26 and BPF 11 candidates. Raijor Dal contested on 13 seats, Assam Jatiya Parishad on 10 seats, CPI(M) on three seats and All Party Hill Leaders Conference on two seats.
While Aam Aadmi Party and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) contested on 18 seats each, TMC contested on 22 seats and JMM on 16 seats.
258 independent candidates took part in the polls.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP won 60 seats while its allies AGP and UPPL won nine and six MLAs respectively. There were 29 legislators in Congress; Its partners were AIUDF 16 and BPF four, CPI(M) one and Independent MLA.
