West Bengal’s second phase poll saw a record turnout of 92.6%; Total State participation at highest since Independence

The second and final phase of voting for the West Bengal Assembly elections on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 saw a record turnout of 92.65% amid isolated incidents of unrest and violence. This means that, according to the State’s Chief Electoral Officer, the total turnout in the state’s two-phase voting was approximately 93%; This is the highest voting rate seen in West Bengal Assembly elections since Independence.

In the second phase, voting was held in 142 Assembly seats spread across seven districts in south Bengal. The highest voting rates were recorded in rural-dominated districts of Purba Bardhaman (93.39%), followed by Hooghly (91.41%), South 24 Parganas (91.45%), North 24 Parganas (91.39%) and Nadia (91.35%) districts.

The lowest turnout was in Kolkata South administrative district, where 87.25% of voters exercised their right to vote. While the adjoining Kolkata North administrative district recorded a turnout of 88.91%, Howrah saw a turnout of 90.93%. The voting rate is expected to increase as the final figures have not yet been released by the Election Commission at the time of publication.

This is in line with the record turnout in the first phase on April 23, when 93.19% of voters cast ballots in 152 seats. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said: “Highest ever voting percentage in West Bengal since Independence in both Phase I and II – Chunav ka Parv, Paschim Bengal ka Garv.”
