Government provides $200 million in funding for weatherization projects

The federal government has announced $200 million in new funding for projects that will help communities in every state and territory become more resilient to severe weather events.

Ahead of the summer bushfire season, the Minister of Emergency Management Kristy McBainHe said 96 projects will receive new support from the government’s $1 billion Disaster Ready Fund.

“Australians are no strangers to the floods, bushfires and cyclones that affect us every year,” he said.

Examples of new financing include:

  • NT: $594,000 for an Emergency Coordination Facility for Alice Springs City Council, which will improve local disaster response capabilities.

  • NSW: $14,174,095 for the Narrandera Urban Stormwater Improvement to mitigate the effects of a 1 in 100 year flood event.

  • WA: $895,114 to increase Karajarri Ranger Capacity to reduce extreme bushfire risks.

  • -VIC: $6,454,104 for Numurkah Flood Mitigation Project – construction of two ring levees.

  • QLD: $14,620,000 for the Palm Island Hurricane Shelter, an 800-person hurricane shelter and evacuation center.

  • SA: $1,600,634 for Wakefield’s Flood Resilience Building, an infrastructure project to protect the Townsvale Estate in Balaklava.

  • STONE: $540,000 for the Launceston Flood Mitigation Plan.

  • TO BEHAVE: $421,240 for Flash Flood Warning System – uses flood data and modeling to provide timely, location-specific, relevant alerts to the community.
