Burnley ‘disgusted’ by racist abuse sent to Hannibal Mejbri

Burnley They say they are ‘disgusted’ by online racist abuse directed at midfielder Hannibal Mejbri after Clarets’ Premier League match Chelsea.
Following the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Mejbri was sent an abusive message on Instagram.
Sharing a photo of the abuse on Instagram, the Tunisian wrote in another post: “The year is 2026 and there are still people like this. Please educate yourself and your children.”
Burnley said the post had been reported to police and Instagram owner Meta for further investigation.
In the statement made by the club, it was said: “There is no place for this in our society and we condemn it unreservedly.”
“The club remains clear in its stance – we have a zero tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination.
“The club has reported the post to Instagram parent company Meta and expects a strong response from them, along with the Premier League and the police, and will work to ensure the person responsible is identified and investigated.
“Hannibal will have the full support of the club and Burnley fans who condemn the abuse. There is no room for racism.”
In Saturday’s match, Mejbri was on the receiving end of the foul that earned Wesley Fofana his first yellow card, before the Chelsea defender was later sent off for a second bookable offence.
In November last year, Preston North End’s Milutin Osmajic was handed a nine-match ban and a £21,000 fine after he was found guilty of racially abusing Mejbri in the Championship match against Burnley.
BBC Sport has contacted Meta for a response.
