Australia news live: community at Gellibrand warned too late to leave as Otways bushfire grows; manhunt continues in remote NSW | Australia news

‘Tough’ conditions for firefighters in south-west Victoria

Residents of Gellibrand in Victoria’s south-west were told it was too late to leave due to a bushfire raging on the Carlisle River just a kilometer from the town, bushfire authority Victoria’s chief fire officer said. Chris Hardman He said the extremely hot day experienced in the state yesterday made things difficult for firefighters.

He told ABC’s Weekend Breakfast:

That fire is right on the edge of Gellibrand, and that fire will continue to advance today. As conditions are a little milder, firefighters will do everything they can to protect community assets in Gellibrand and the surrounding area.

Residents should also keep an eye out for the Walwa fire in the northeast as it is likely to move south on Sunday, the official said.

This will not necessarily threaten communities in the coming days, but the size of the fire could increase significantly and continue to challenge firefighters in the coming weeks.

He said it was hot and dry in the north of the state and conditions were really challenging.

These fires can continue to grow and challenge us. This is very early in the season, right now it’s the peak of fire season. We have experienced some terrible fires, but this is not the time to take our eyes off the challenges ahead.

About 1,700 firefighters were deployed in the state Sunday morning, he said.
