Australian gas not keeping the lights on in Japan. What’s the scam?

Japan exported 40% of the gas it imported from Australia in 2024, but gas prices are high there. What is fraud?
The scam involves gas being exported to Japan, thought to be for “energy security” by keeping the lights on in Tokyo, but is instead being re-exported to the benefit of Japanese companies and to the detriment of Australian consumers (and taxpayers).
report A study by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) shows that Japan resells 1.7 times the total volume of direct imports from Australia.
It has nothing to do with energy security, it’s just good business. For Japan.
