Australian Olympians from 1980 Moscow Games finally recognised

The Australian Olympics, competing in 1980 Moscow games, was finally recognized for their efforts after 45 years.
The 1980 games were a black spot in the Olympic record.
Seven months ago, then the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and caused many countries to boycott the games.
Although the Australian activity never boycotted, public opinion sensitivity to Australia was widespread.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser called on the Australian Olympic Federation (now the Australian Olympic Committee) to support the boycott and even offered $ 6000 as an incentive to avoid competing athletes.
Some teams, including all Australian hockeys and equestrian teams, have completely retreated, but eventually the Australian Olympic Federation voted for a narrow vote against withdrawal from games – six votes.
Ultimately, only 121 of the original 273 athletes entered the country – quietly and with a small fanfare – on an unmarked plane and in uniform.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanian and Opposition leader Sussan Ley officially recognized the participation of athletes and later at an address to parliament.
“When you are chosen to wear green and gold, you should have difficulty knowing that the whole nation is with you,” the Prime Minister said.
“And on your return, you should be welcomed and celebrated at home for the inspiration you bring to the new generation of Australian athletes.

“Nevertheless, 45 years ago, the invasion of the Soviet Union’s Afghanistan, a dark shadow on what should be the shining moment.
“While countries around the world are struggling with a boycott, Australian athletes – some are still young people – were placed in an incredibly difficult position.
“One hundred and twenty -one chose to compete under the Australian Olympic Flag. Others chose to participate in boycott. Those who won the election had no chance to choose because they decided for them.”
Albania, return athletes, “cold silence or brutal interpretations,” he said.
“Today we correct it. Today, we know everything you have achieved on the 45th anniversary and accept everything you overcome.
“Be proud of both. You are the Olympicists. You are Australians and you won your place in the history of the game and in our nation. Welcome to Parliament and welcome home.”
