Autorickshaw driver attempts self-immolation after an argument with traffic police in Chitradurga

An autorickshaw driver suffered more than 50 per cent burn injuries when he tried to set himself on fire following an argument with traffic police in Chitradurga on Saturday night (November 22).
Thippeswamy, a native of Malappanahatti near Chitradurga, set himself on fire at Gandhi Circle around 10 pm. Local people rushed to his rescue and managed to extinguish the fire. He was shifted to the government hospital in Chitradurga and later to a private hospital in Davangere for further treatment. According to family members and other motorists, Thippeswamy tried to end his life because he was fed up with the traffic police who ticketed him and took his car keys.
Police said the traffic police stopped Thippeswamy for going in the wrong direction. He started an argument with them, causing authorities to suspect he was drunk while driving. They insisted that Thippeswamy undergo a breathalyzer test, but he refused. He then walked a short distance and from there tried to threaten the police by pouring gasoline on himself. First, he poured gasoline on the ground and set it on fire. His body caught fire while he was holding the gas can. The video clip of the action went viral on social media platforms.
Chitradurga Police Commissioner Ranjit Kumar Bandaru said: Hindu He said that the traffic police were doing their duty and the driver was causing trouble. “We have registered a case against him under Section 226 of the BNS for attempting to die by suicide to prevent a public servant from discharging his duty,” Mr. Bandaru added.
