Azzi Fudd wins WNBA All-Star 3-point contest as first rookie ever

Azzi Fudd put on a historic shooting display during her first WNBA All-Star weekend. The Dallas Wings guard won the 3-point contest on Friday night, becoming the first rookie in league history to win the event.

Fudd finished the first round with 30 points, 10 points below the maximum possible score. Portland Fire star Bridget Carleton was eliminated after scoring 19 points in the round. Fudd took 27 shots and missed only six of his attempts en route to winning the coveted title.

Fudd acknowledged he had some jitters Friday night. “You saw ‘only’ six shots, but I think that’s too many,” Fudd said. “But to be honest, I was really nervous. I was excited.”

Fudd added: “It’s fun to do because… and I don’t want to sound cocky… but it’s easy for me, just a set shot. Take the ball off the rack; it’s really muscle memory. That’s what I’ve been doing since I was young.”

Fudd entered the All-Star break this season averaging 2.2 shots from behind the three-point line. He has made a total of 53 three-pointers so far in his rookie year.

While injuries affected Fudd’s college basketball career, Dallas valued her overall talent and made her the first pick in the WNBA Draft in April.

Fudd also said his injuries had an unexpected benefit. Repeated shooting during rehab helped sharpen his form and establish the rhythm needed to knock down shots from the same spots in Friday’s three-point contest.

“It was a lot of chair shots, a lot of set shots, so you get really good at shooting off the shelf, being steady and robotic, and having to drop your shot.”

Before the three-point contest, the WNBA launched another All-Star event, the Shooting Stars contest, in Chicago.

Four teams of three took part in the Shooting Stars competition, which replaced the skills challenge of the past. Each roster included a former player described as a legend, a current player and a rising young player. Team Washington defeated Team Seattle to win the inaugural event.
