BCCI’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s contract renewed till next year

In New Delhi, Ajit Agarkar will continue his duties as the senior selection committee chairman after the BCCI decided to renew his contract for another year keeping in mind the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Under Agarkar’s chairmanship, Indian teams selected between October 2023 and March 2026 have reached four ICC tournament finals, winning three of them (two T20 World Cups and one ICC Champions Trophy), making it a foregone conclusion that his contract will be renewed for a fourth year.

“Agarkar has not sought an extension. A selector can serve up to four years in a junior or senior selection committee and up to five years cumulatively in both committees. Therefore, Ajit’s contract is being renewed and not being extended,” a senior BCCI source told PTI.

Sources close to Agarkar have always maintained that he preferred to let decision-makers evaluate the performance of his team rather than seek a renewal.

Continuity ahead of the 50-plus World Cup is one of the key factors behind the board’s decision.

During its tenure, the committee took on many challenging tasks, including overseeing the Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and phasing out veteran pacer Mohammed Shami from international cricket.
He also made a bold selection call, dropping Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill from the T20 World Cup squad and fielding an in-form player in Ishan Kishan instead.
