North London synagogue targeted in another attempted arson attack on Jewish property

An attempt was made to arson a synagogue in north-west London overnight.

The Community Safety Trust said it caused minor smoke damage to the inner room of Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow but there were no injuries or significant structural damage.

A spokesman for the group said: “Following similar recent incidents targeting the Jewish community in Finchley, Golders Green and Hendon, we are aware of another arson attempt, this time targeting a synagogue in North London.

“We would like to thank the Met Police and London Fire Brigade for their rapid response and action to protect the Jewish community during this unprecedented time.

“We are supporting the affected area and working closely with police who are investigating and trying to identify those responsible.”

Numerous arson attacks or attempted arson attacks on Jewish property in the area have been reported in the past month.

On Friday evening a man was seen carrying a plastic bag, which was later found to contain three bottles of liquid, approaching a number of shops in Hendon, placing the bag on the ground and burning the items inside.

When the flames could not ignite completely, the man fled the scene. While there were no injuries in the incident, minor damage occurred to the front of the store.

On Saturday afternoon, a police cordon was established around a building said to have been formerly used by the Jewish community.
