Ben Stokes retires: England captain rejects suggestions he could reverse retirement

Head coach Brendon McCullum said he tried to persuade Stokes to stay by telling him of his plans on Sunday, but the international career of one of England’s greatest cricketers was over after 15 years, 122 Tests, 114 one-day internationals and 43 T20s.

Stokes remained calm after England’s 160-run defeat, which confirmed a 2-1 series defeat, embracing his opponent and briefly waving to the crowd following his post-match interviews.

The all-rounder on Sunday said retirement was the “best thing” for him.

He went further on Monday, admitting that events in recent weeks – the team being left out of the second test against the Black Caps after violating a midnight curfew – had influenced his decision.

“Once again, there was a series of unfortunate events,” Stokes said.

“Over the next few weeks, we’ll ease the pressure and ask, ‘Did he contribute?’ Am I sure we can say? Maybe.

“But the real truth is that everything I’ve done over a long period of time over the last six to 12 months has taken its toll.

“As good as it is, as exciting as it is, and as great an honor as it is, there are also some downsides to being in this role.”
