No Putin meeting without a Ukraine deal in sight: Trump

US President Donald Trump said he does not plan to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin until he thinks an agreement has been reached that will secure peace between Russia and Ukraine.

“You should know we’re going to make a deal, I’m not going to waste my time,” Trump told reporters in Doha.

Trump was making a refueling stop in Qatar on his way to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit, which starts in Malaysia on Sunday.

Kirill Dmitriev, Putin’s envoy for investment and economic cooperation, said on Friday that he believes Russia, the United States and Ukraine are “pretty close to a diplomatic solution” that would end the three-year war.

Speaking to CNN after arriving in Washington DC to meet with US officials, Dmitriev said that the planned summit between Trump and Putin in Budapest has not been canceled, but will probably take place later.

A White House official confirmed that Dmitriev, who announced his visit in X, will meet with US envoy Steve Witkoff.

Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine on Saturday killed at least four people and injured 20, local officials said, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to make new demands for foreign air defense systems.

Police in the capital Kiev said two people were killed and 13 people were injured in a ballistic missile attack early on Saturday.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine wrote in the Telegram messaging application that in one place a fire broke out in a non-residential building, while in another area the debris of missiles that fell on an open area damaged the windows of nearby buildings.

During the attack, Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram, “There are explosions in the capital. The city is under ballistic attack.”

Zelenskiy said such attacks intensify Ukraine’s need for Patriot defense systems.

“It is precisely because of these types of attacks that we are placing special emphasis on Patriot systems to protect our cities from these horrors,” he wrote in

“America, Europe and the G7 countries can help ensure that such attacks no longer threaten lives,” he said.

Zelenskiy hopes that Ukraine can purchase 25 Patriots from the United States to strengthen its air defense, especially in cities.
