Billionaires declare freedom is under threat as Labour plots Brexit betrayal | UK | News

Hopeful Labor leaders with ideas of pulling Britain back into Europe may have a fight on their hands, as two billionaire Brexiteers have vowed to take up the fight. Lord Cruddas and Peter Hargreaves, who donated almost £5m to the Brexit campaign, spoke out after former Health Secretary West Streeting, one of the likely Labor leaders, described the 2016 Brexit vote as a “catastrophic mistake”.

The remarks come as Sir Keir Starmer talks about closer ties with the EU in the face of pressure from the Ukraine and Iran wars and his volatile personal relations with the US President. Donald Trump. The third big horse in any leadership race could be to leave Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, who also speaks fondly about the European Union.

But Mr Burnham was forced to distance himself from Mr Streeting’s comments as he needed to win a seat in the Makerfield by-election to return to Westminster as an MP. Makerfield in Greater Manchester voted decisively to leave 10 years ago.

But even if any of the trio gets their hands on the keys to 10 Downing Street, Lord Cruddas and Mr Hargreaves intend to resist any plans for a revived EU romance.

Mr Hargreaves, co-founder of investment platform Hargreaves Lansdown, said: He told the Telegraph: “Fifteen million voted for Brexit, while just nine million voted for Labor in the general election.

“I wonder what the figure would be if there was a general election today? Would Labor get four million? They have proven to be completely incompetent and incompetent.”

Lord Cruddas, the big brute of Brexit, has slapped Labour’s every intention into saying that “without another referendum, any UK government has no power to take us back into the EU”.

He added that this was “political suicide”.

Wes Streeting has called for a “proper contest” to replace Sir Keir, calling for rejoining the European Union and confirming he would run if the race was triggered.

Speaking at the Progress think tank’s conference in central London on Saturday, Mr Streeting described Brexit as a “catastrophic mistake” and broke the ice on an issue Labor had long avoided revisiting.

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has also been investigated over his support for returning to the EU as he seeks to stand as a candidate in the upcoming Makerfield by-election.

Mr Burnham was asked in an interview with ITV News on Saturday whether he was in favor of rejoining the EU.

He told the broadcaster: “I’ve said there’s a case for it in the long term, but I’m not advocating it in this by-election.

“What I’m actually saying is the focus right now is domestically; the UK needs to focus very much on the here and now and the issues that affect people.”
