BJP Seeks NREGS in Newly Formed Municipalities

Adilabad: A BJP delegation led by Nirmal district president Ritesh Rathod met Union Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Sunday and urged him to extend MGNREGS benefits to newly formed municipalities like Khanapur.

These municipalities were earlier large gram panchayats where the scheme was in force, but after it was upgraded to urban local bodies, the benefits were stopped, leaders said.

Kishan Reddy told the delegation that the issue has been brought to the notice of the Union Cabinet and a decision on extending the scheme to newly created municipalities will be taken soon.

BJP leaders also demanded release of funds for the development of Khanapur municipality.

Ritesh Rathod said many poor workers have lost their job cards and livelihood opportunities due to the discontinuation of the programme. He claimed that around 6,000 business cards were affected in Khanapur municipality alone.

Khanapur mayor Ankam Mounika Mahender, councilors Satyawati, Ashok, Sinduja and Prakash were among those who met the Union minister.
