Fans at Toronto’s Rogers Center loudly booed Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani ahead of Game 1 of the World Series on Friday.

While it’s common for fans to taunt opposing players during pregame lineups, the boos serenading Ohtani were uniquely loud compared to those from his Dodgers teammates.

Ohtani could not silence the crowd in his first appearance in the match and entered the first inning ahead.

When Ohtani entered free agency in the winter of 2023, he visited the Blue Jays as a potential suitor before signing with the Dodgers.

The Blue Jays gave Ohtani a hat and a jacket for Ohtani’s dog, Decoy. Blue Jays manager John Schneider joked that he would want both of those gifts back.

“I hope he brought the Blue Jay cap he got from us at our meeting. I hope he eventually brought it back,” Schneider said Thursday.

“And Decoy’s jacket,” he added. “Something like ‘Give us back our stuff already.'”

Ohtani smiled when he heard Schneider’s words and said simply, “In my garage,” through a translator.

The Blue Jays’ manager said he wasn’t sure how close the team was to signing the Japanese superstar.

“You felt good when we met him and you felt good about the feedback he gave about our organization and the opportunity here,” Schneider said.

“But you never know exactly how a player is feeling in free agency, and there are a lot of things that need to be done for them personally, too. So you can’t think about what-ifs. Think about the 26 players we have.”
