The prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann will be free to roam the streets once again after authorities decided to end 24/7 police surveillance. A German regional court made a sensational decision to lift the protection from midnight on Friday.

Pedophile Christian Brueckner, 48, has been under constant surveillance for more than six months while living in a portable hut near the city center of Kiel in northeastern Germany. A Daily Express investigation last month found that despite a surveillance order, Brueckner was often seen walking alone and was reported to have repeatedly evaded police officers by cycling through roads inaccessible to their vehicles.

The worrying move by authorities comes as the Daily Express is aware of at least two violent fights between local residents since the sex offender was released from prison for rape in September.

In April Brueckner was involved in a ‘fist fight’ with an Englishman living in Kiel; In another incident, a sex offender was involved in an incident when an Irish man threatened him and hit him with his bike. I asked the man, “Aren’t you afraid of the monster?” He was said to have said.

Kiel Police said they would appeal the court’s decision. It appears Brueckner will still have to wear the ankle tag, but he will now be able to move freely without any eyes on him. Brueckner’s presence in the city had sparked angry protests from worried parents, who forced authorities to move him between different shelters and hotels. At one stage the career criminal was living in a tent in a forest.

Brueckner enjoyed carefree bicycle rides under police protection, and reportedly toyed with police protection several times by cycling on routes they could not follow with their vehicles.

Last month, the Daily Express was confronted by Brueckner’s armed undercover bodyguard when we dared to question the sex offender about the disappearance of Maddie McCann.

The little British boy became one of the world’s most famous missing persons cases after he disappeared at the age of three on a family holiday in Praia de Luz, Portugal, in 2007.

One parent, who wished to remain anonymous, became involved in protest groups and monitored Brueckner’s movements on social media.

“To say I am shocked and outraged would be an understatement,” he said, “this is a man who has committed crimes before, a high-risk repeat offender who has played a cat-and-mouse game with the police.”

The angry parent said the move to stop watching Brueckner was madness, especially given that Kiel is holding a major sailing festival towards the end of this month. Kieler Woche, Kiel Week, sees millions of families and children flock to the city for the world’s largest sailing regatta.

“Brueckner, as far as we know, clashed with two people in Kiel, and with over a million tourists coming here, it seemed appropriate for us to watch him at the biggest time of the year. It’s crazy,” Parent added.

“We all have to live in the nightmare waiting for a monster in our area to strike again. The people who are there to protect us have failed time and time again.

“Ministers placed him in undisclosed locations around Kiel, despite the fact that parents’ councils have the right to know his whereabouts so that they can organize the protection of their children. Police have failed to track him down on numerous occasions.

“The authorities are not fulfilling their responsibilities towards the citizens, how would they like it to be placed at one end of the garden?”

The Kiel Police Department said they appealed the decision of the regional authorities. The ministry, which uses the name Christian B due to German privacy laws, said in a statement: “The Kiel Police Department reported that the court order regarding the monitoring of Christian B. has not been extended.

“The Kiel Police Department appealed to the Kiel District Court yesterday (Tuesday). The decision is still pending.

“The safety of citizens remains the top priority for the Kiel Police Department. Even without this measure, we will continue to fulfill our duties to prevent danger and prosecute crimes in accordance with the court decision.”

The statement also stated that the police “are in close contact with all relevant institutions within the framework of the law.”

Brueckner has never been charged with any crime in relation to the McCann case and denies any involvement, but Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said the convicted rapist “remains a suspect to us”.

Brueckner has been in Kiel since being released from prison in September last year after serving a seven-and-a-half-year sentence for raping a 72-year-old American tourist in Praia da Luz in 2005. Brueckner has several previous criminal convictions, including sexually abusing children in 1994 and 2016.

German prosecutors view the pedophile as the prime suspect but have been unable to obtain enough evidence to file criminal charges, even though cell phone data suggests he may have been in the area at the time of Maddie McCann’s disappearance in 2007.
