Boy, 17, has leg amputated after being stabbed in popular coastal resort – as man, 18, is charged over attack

A 17-year-old boy had his leg amputated after he was stabbed on Barry Island on Bank Holiday Monday.

Emergency services and air ambulance arrived at the popular seaside resort following reports that a teenager had been ‘stabbed in the leg’ earlier this week.

The incident occurred on the Whitsun bank holiday weekend when the beach was packed with tourists.

Initially, the teenager’s leg injury was not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.

But South Wales Police said the 17-year-old, from Cardiff, has since had to undergo amputation and remains in intensive care at the University Hospital of Wales.

Police have since charged 18-year-old Iris Ahmed with wounding with intent and possession of a knife in a public place in connection with the incident.

Ahmed appeared at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court this morning, where he spoke only to confirm his address, date of birth and name.

Prosecutor Angharad Jones described the incident as a serious incident in which the victim suffered stab wounds to the leg, resulting in amputation.

He added that the 17-year-old suffered life-changing injuries from an ‘extremely dangerous weapon’.

A South Wales Police spokesman said the victim and his family had been kept fully informed while inquiries into the case were ongoing.

The alleged assault was deemed too serious to be heard in magistrates’ court and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 3 at Cardiff Crown Court.

Ahmed, of Riverside, Cardiff, was detained.
