Britain’s favorite decade has emerged, but if you thought Brits were pining for the swinging sixties or naughty nights out, then the years are long gone.

It turns out that the time we miss the most gives us Cool Britannia. Spice GirlsSaturday morning TV, Friends, blockbuster video nights and proper nights out – 1990s. One poll shows that it won more than a third (36%) of the popular vote in the decade before the millennium, ahead of the 1980s (27%).

Research shows that nostalgic nights out are also growing in popularity; 70% would like to do something that will help them turn off their smartphones and move away from them.

Options range from bingo to the big screen; More than half (54%) have recently visited a cinema, arcades (30%) and bowling alleys (27%). Bingo clubs (15%) are also high on the list of nostalgic pastimes booming in Britain.

The survey of 2,000 Britons by The Bingo Association found that love for the ’90s stems from its recognition of a simpler lifestyle (51%), better music and entertainment (51%), less time spent on technology and screens (41%) and more face-to-face interaction (40%).

At the top of the list of trends where Brits describe the 90s as the best decade are: Friends (37%), Spice Girls (31%), Game Boys (20%) and Saturday Morning TV (25%).

Brits also said they felt it was more affordable to socialize and go out (39%), it reminded them of a previous life when smartphones dominated daily routines (37%), and they had a stronger sense of community (34%).

Nicole Garrett, Chief Executive of the Bingo Association, said: “As people turn off the internet and look to reconnect, we are seeing a resurgence in traditional social activities such as bingo, which bring people together in a fun and relaxed environment, with younger generations in particular flocking to bingo clubs to find shared, real-world experiences.”

He said National Bingo Week, from June 22 to 28, was the perfect opportunity to get involved, offering the chance to step away from scrolling and enjoy a great night out.

Chief Exec added: “Whether you’re a regular or trying it for the first time, it’s all about big laughs, genuine connections and the thrill of playing together – with the added thrill of a guaranteed £250,000 prize to be won on Sunday 28 June.”

Data from bingo clubs reveals that almost half (45%) of new members are under 35 and seven in 10 (69%) think bingo is no longer just for older generations.

During National Bingo Week, bingo clubs across the country will host special sessions and special offers.

The survey of 2,000 UK adults was conducted online and commissioned by Brands2Life on behalf of the Bingo Association. It was conducted by market research company Clariti. Data were collected between May 26 and 28.
