Bus Plunges into Gorge in Nandurbar, 2 Students Dead

Mumbai: In a tragic accident in Nandurbar district, a bus carrying students of a government-aided ashram school plunged into a deep gorge, killing two students and injuring many others. It was stated that the bus was carrying more than 50 students at the time of the accident.
Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, and the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to a statement from the Disaster Management Unit (DMU), the accident took place in the afternoon while the bus was passing through the Ghat section from Molgi to Akkalkuwa. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
According to sources, the bus involved in the Nandurbar accident was carrying 56 people, including 54 students, 1 teacher and 1 attendant, who were returning to Adivasi Ashram School Mehunbare, Chalisgaon Ashram School in Jalgaon district.
“These students had come to their respective villages in Nandurbar for the Diwali holiday and were returning to school when the accident took place around 3.40 pm. The driver lost control of the bus and it then flew into a valley. Shockingly, the driver immediately fled the scene,” said a source.
While rescue teams immediately reached the scene, the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Nandurbar district Collector Dr. Mittali Sethi said, “We lost two children. The other 18 people were admitted to the Civil Hospital and are being closely monitored.”
Nandurbar Civil Surgeon Dr. Vinay Sonawane told this newspaper that two students, a seven-year-old boy and the other a 14-year-old girl, were brought dead to Akkalkuwa Rural Hospital. “After the autopsy, the bodies were handed over to the families. Currently, 20 students are receiving treatment at Akkalkuwa Rural Hospital,” he said.
Dr. Sonawane added that 22 students were referred to Nandurbar Medical College for further care and all of them were declared stable. Meanwhile, 20 students were discharged after their first treatment and reunited with their families. He also stated that blood samples were taken from the bus attendant and the teacher to determine whether alcohol consumption played a role in the incident.
