Business lobby warns Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan’s working from home laws could send jobs interstate; unions welcome move
Andrew Stewart, Professor of Study and Organization at Queensland Technology University, said that he saw two basic ways to configure the legislation: one with a narrowed employee scope of an equal opportunity law and the government passed a wider law that cannot be applied in the private sector.
Stewart said that the proposed legislation was complex because the Kennett government in 1996 gave the authority to regulate employment conditions to the Society of Nations, which was renewed by state and federal labor governments in 2009.
It is available for some other parts of the legislation that can be amended by the Victoria government, such as carvings in workplace law, laws of discrimination and occupational health and safety law.
“They can only continue and pass a law [enshrining work from home]To understand that it may not be implemented in the private sector and that the attempt to implement it can be met with constitutional difficulties. ”
“Alternatively, they may include the right to work from home in the Equal Opportunity Law, but then I have a dilemma, because they will be limited to the workers working from home, helping their care responsibilities or manage a disability.”
Paul Guerra, Chairman of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Executive Officer, described the change as “surprising”, thinking that the federal government is currently focusing on increasing productivity with an economic reform round table.
“If Victoria moves away from the legal national system, businesses will act between states and work will be lost,” he said.

“If we want businesses to be productive and to increase the economic expectations of everyone in this state and in this country – we should leave their own ways and let them work in the most appropriate way for their models.”
Guerra said that the proposal could damage efficiency and teamwork and create more inequality because only a few people were actually able to work from home.

“[Working from home] In some contexts, it certainly works well, but this should be determined by the employee in consultation with the employee. ”
Allan rejected that policy would create divisions within the workplaces between those who can work from home and those who could not do.
He said that many people who have to come to work have benefited from these arrangements through partners or friends who can benefit from the opportunity.
According to Grattan Institute, Victoria Commercial Hall Secretary Luke Hilakari supported the movement and said 40 percent of the workers already made hybrid work variation.
“Since we won the weekend, working from home is probably the biggest development in the work-life balance … [Labor] This is very important to Enshine ..
“There is some insecurity that people will do wrong things [while working from home].
“But the truth is that it makes people’s lives easier. Especially for women – women’s participation in the labor force has increased as a whole.”
Consultation on the law shall be managed by the Ministry of Premier and Cabinet. It will discuss the type and size of the enterprises covered by the plan that can be made reasonable from home and at the same time an acceptable definition of what creates a remote work.

Daniel Victor, the chief lawyer of employment and industrial law in Maurice Blackburn, called the issue of working from home as “barbecue stopped – was the number 1 employment issue that people wanted to talk about.
The authority said it would be easier for the government to conceal the work of hybrid in law while in the public sector in accordance with the current workplace laws.
“Trying to hide a right [to work from home] Because the private sector may be open to the challenge, but we have to wait and see what legislation is and how it is framed. ”
“Even if a employer can challenge it, I don’t know why they will challenge such a right … Any employer who does not want to allow working from home makes you feel like he wants to return to their dinosaur ages.”
Gordon Industrial Law President Marcus Clayton said that even if the provisions have touched the laws of discrimination, health and security, the legislation can be written in a way to cover the “very important rate of the population.
“The main aspect of this is that a person puts an ideological objection to employees who only fake up and demands the right to work from home, and puts them on the employer to show that a person cannot really work from home.”
Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece Dokuz Today The program was clear that hybrid work arrangements did not go, but it was important not to lose “cooperation and new ideas geliştir but physically present in the workplace.
“Family -friendly, flexible workplaces should definitely stay here,” he said. “But at the same time I know the best possibility of Melbourne when it is full of people, and I think the best when the workplaces are full of people.”
The government is waiting to pass the laws next year and prepared the ground as the first major policy announcement to be discussed in an election year for the 2026 state survey.

After the widespread emergence in the earliest of this year, former Federal Opposition leader Peter Dutton withdrew the middle campaign in the promise he promised to end flexible working rules for public officials in Canberra.
State opposition leader Brad Battin said Victoria liberals realized that hybrid work arrangements have become a “valuable çalış option for workers.
Uz We support measures that help the Victorians to benefit from a better work-life balance and will closely review any legislation to ensure flexibility, productivity and personal choice, ”he said.
The Prime Minister’s appearance at the Saturday Workers ‘State Conference served as a semi -curse for the 2026 state election campaign, and workers’ speakers pointed out the fact that the survey was less than 500 days away.
A promotional video for Allan launched the political slogan “Jacinta Allan: Your Side”. Anthony Albanese accepted a similar slogan with the opposition leader in 2021.
In his speech to the conference, Allan spoke about a worker he talked about about the difference from home.
During a video meeting of the worker he called Jane – by another employee working from the house at that time – he said that his remote work was no longer sustainable.
“Losing one day, damaging his children and his family,” Allan said. “He had to cut his watches. He earns less and spends more and more stressful.
“This is not about whether the work is done or not. It is about this force. Who is looking for shots and who will be pushed, and workers, especially women, single mothers and caregivers, will not be punished for the need for balance in their lives.”
Hilakari warned that the liberal party should be “very cautious ında to oppose any legislation that agrees to work from home. “They saw what happened in the last Federal elections … If the Victoria liberal party opposes it, the union movement will continue until the ballot.”
