Canada ready to ‘intensify’ trade talks as Trump reportedly prepares to hit more countries with new tariffs – US politics live | US news

Trump is preparing new tariffs on dozens of countries, FT reports

President Donald Trump is set to impose new tariffs on dozens of countries this week, with a temporary 10% global tariff set to expire on Friday, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

The FT said the most immediate new taxes were expected to be on par with the 10% tariffs currently in force, but the administration was also working on other investigations that could give it legal authority to propose higher taxes.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the report.

The president of Wisconsin’s largest mosque says he was subjected to “dehumanizing” treatment during more than 80 days in federal immigration detention; this treatment reminded him of the time he spent in Israeli military prisons in occupied Palestine nearly forty years ago.

“All this brought back old memories of what happened to me when I was tried in Palestine,” Salah Sarsour said in his first interview since his release last month. “The humiliation, the way the guards treated them, the way they talked to people, the way they tried to humiliate people.” He said he lost more than 30 pounds while in immigration detention.

Sarsour, who was born in the West Bank and has been a U.S. permanent resident for nearly three decades, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in March and released after a federal judge ruled that he was likely detained in retaliation for his advocacy for Palestinian rights; The judge said the detention would most likely be unlawful.

The Trump administration continues to call for his deportation, and the U.S. secretary of state, Marco Rubio, personally signed a memo last year saying Sarsour was deportable because “his actions undermine U.S. foreign policy to combat antisemitism around the world.”
