Carnage as truck loses load on Adelaide’s North-South Motorway
The shocking moment when a truck carrying concrete slabs caused a massacre on one of South Australia’s busiest roads was caught on camera.
At around 10.30am on Friday, a HGV carrying several heavy slabs was merging lanes on the North-South Highway at Bolivar in Adelaide’s northern suburbs when part of its load suddenly slid off the back of the vehicle.
Two 15-ton slabs hit the road in a huge cloud of dust and then hit three cars parked on the hard shoulder.
Due to the impact, the cars flew and collided with two people standing on the roadside.
Miraculously, none of the people involved suffered life-threatening injuries; One was hospitalized with a suspected broken arm, and two suffered minor injuries.
The chaotic scene caused huge traffic queues as debris was cleared and vehicles were rescued.
About half an hour after the incident, a wrong-way driver estimated queues were more than a kilometer long by the time emergency services responded to the scene.
A SA Police spokesman said investigations into the crash were still ongoing.
“Police are surprised that no one was killed in this incident,” the statement said.
“This incident is a reminder that all road users have a responsibility to help keep South Australia’s roads safe. “Motorists should allow heavy vehicles the space and stopping distance they need, and drivers carrying loads should ensure they are properly secured before starting their journey.”
