Carson Hocevar says his mom was more fired up about him going to the Met Gala than winning at Talladega

It’s been a good few weeks being Carson Hocevar, driver of Spire Motorsports’ No. 77 Chevrolet.

Last month, Hocevar won his first career NASCAR Cup Series race by taking the checkered flag in Jack Link’s 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, then canceling out a celebration for the ages.

A few days later, he became the first NASCAR driver to attend the Met Gala since Jeff Gordon attended in 2010.

Sure, it’s usually a parade of people in silly costumes smelling their own farts, but still, getting a rider there is a big deal for the sport.

You can imagine that Hocevar’s family was very excited for him, but guess which of these achievements his mother was more excited about?

While the Cup Series was at Dover this weekend for the NASCAR All-Star Race, Hocevar stopped by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the second day of practice for the Indianapolis 500.

During the visit, he was with Spire Motorsports’ corporate cousin, Andretti Global, as both are under the TWG Motorsports umbrella – but he also took some time to visit Will Buxton, James Hinchcliffe and Townsend Bell at the IndyCar booth on FOX.

There she talked about the Met Gala and how excited her mother was to have her there.

“I laugh at the fact that my mom thinks winning Talladega is cool or something,” he said. “(But) having his son go to the Met Gala was a lifetime achievement.”

Hocevar also explained that he was there not because NASCAR had purchased a table at the event, but because the organizers reached out to them.

“The craziest part was they made it to NASCAR,” he said. “This wasn’t about NASCAR paying for tickets or trying to find me a sponsor. It was literally like NASCAR bought the car and said, ‘Do you know what this is? Do you want to go?’ he said.

As I said, as much attention as the Met Gala received (rightfully so), Hocevar’s presence was a huge win for NASCAR in terms of scouting the sport.

Now it’s a matter of how many eyes watching the Met Gala broadcasts will tune in to a race.

Unfortunately, I suspect there aren’t as many as they hoped.
