Union Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the construction of 5,000 houses for the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Manipur, officials said.

After meeting Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in New Delhi on Monday evening (February 23, 2026), Chouhan said he cleared the construction of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) for IDPs affected by ethnic violence in the northeastern state.

The Union Minister also assured that all assistance will be provided to ensure peace and normalcy in the state, an official statement said.

At least 260 people have been killed and thousands left homeless in ethnic violence between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the Kuki-Zo groups in the hills since May 2023.

Earlier this month, the Manipur government had floated a proposal to build 5,000 houses for IDPs.

The state government had announced in January that it aimed to resettle 10,000 internally displaced families by March 31.

It was stated that 16,500 IDPs have been settled in the province to date.
