The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the reappointment of Chief Justice of India Tushar Mehta for a three-year term from July 1, ensuring continuity of the Centre’s legal leadership before the Supreme Court and other constitutional courts.
The decision was conveyed by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) through an order issued on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
Mr. Mehta will continue to serve as the nation’s second-highest law officer for a new three-year term or until further orders, whichever comes first.
Mr. Mehta has represented the Union of India in many important cases involving constitutional interpretation, national security, electoral reforms, citizenship issues, taxation, digital regulation and Centre-State disputes. He has appeared regularly before the Constitutional Benches of the Supreme Court and discussed matters of significant policy consequence for the government.
The ACC approved the appointment of five Additional Solicitor Generals (ASGs), along with Mr. Mehta, to the Supreme Court for another three-year term.
Vikramjit Banerjee and KM Nataraj have been reappointed with effect from July 1, 2026, while Suryaprakash V. Raju, N. Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati have been reappointed with effect from June 30, 2026.
In a separate order, the government reappointed Chetan Sharma as Additional Solicitor General of the Delhi High Court with effect from July 1, 2026 or for a period of six months until further orders.
The reappointments come at a time when the Union Government is busy with cases before the Supreme Court and various High Courts involving a host of constitutional, regulatory and public policy issues.
Mr. Mehta, a senior advocate from Gujarat, first joined the Centre’s legal team as Additional Solicitor General in 2014. He was elevated as Attorney General of India in October 2018 and has since emerged as one of the longest-serving individuals in the office in recent years. Prior to his appointment at the Centre, he served as Additional Solicitor General for Gujarat.
