Challenge Cup final: How have Ulster progressed despite Bilbao heartbreak against Montpellier?

Ulster were best placed second but there were brief positives too, from Timoney’s terrific start to the returning Robert Baloucoune’s superb individual finish.

But there’s also the persistent ‘what if?’ There was also. What if Zac Ward’s missed tackle had not made room for Montpellier’s opening try? Would things have changed if Harry Sheridan had been able to catch the ball as he fell towards the line, or if Tom Stewart had not gone off the line?

All the little moments that played a part in the defeat.

But in reality, given Montpellier’s clinical advantage and dominance in the group, it probably wouldn’t have made much of a difference over the 80 minutes.

The Ulster players had one of the toughest tasks in sport as they dropped to their knees towards the end of the game, pain etched on their faces, as they watched Montpellier lift the silverware they had long desired.

“If you look at where Montpellier are and the teams they have beaten in recent weeks, they are one of the best teams in Europe,” added Murphy.

“We’re disappointed, but we’ll get together and take a look before we leave.”
