Sir Keir Starmer has angrily criticized Donald Trump for threatening to destroy Iranian civilisation, as UK-US relations become increasingly tense.

The US President had chillingly threatened to destroy Iranian civilization “never to be restored”. The angry post on Truth Social came hours before a ceasefire agreement was reached with Tehran. Mr Trump’s comments sparked anger from many and it appears Sir Keir is far from happy either. The UK Prime Minister told ITV News Political Editor Robert Peston: “Let me be really clear about this. These are not words that I would use – I will ever use – because I come to this with our British values and principles.”

Asked about Mr Trump’s use of swear words and phrases such as “Praise be to God”, Sir Keir said: “Let me be really clear about this. These are not words that I would use or ever use because I come to this with our British values and principles.”

Addressing Mr Trump’s threats to “an entire civilisation”, Sir Keir told ITV’s Talking Politics podcast: “That’s why I say, I will never use those words and language in that way – it’s very important that I’m clear that the UK has our principles, our values and we will be guided by them.”

He added: “I’ve been saying for the last few weeks that we won’t be dragged into this war because I’ve been saying there has to be a legal basis, that’s important.

“If you’re going to have our service personnel risk their lives, they need to know they’re doing so on a lawful basis. This isn’t some distant international law issue; these are real people risking their lives on our behalf.”

Taking to Truth Social media, the US President published a profane rant last weekend giving Tehran a set date to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or new attacks would be launched.

He wrote: “Tuesday in Iran will be Power Plant Day and Bridge Day all rolled into one. It won’t happen! Open the damn Strait, you crazy ****s, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to God. President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Sir Keir Starmer said Gulf leaders were “delighted to see a friend” during a visit to the Middle East. The prime minister said he detected “shock that they were attacked in the way they were attacked, a real shock that they were attacked, that they were not part of the attack on Iran, and that they captured many of the incoming missiles and drones.”

Sir Keir told ITV’s Talking Politics podcast: “There’s a sense of relief that there’s a ceasefire, I think there’s a sense that the ceasefire is fragile, there’s a lot of work to be done on the ceasefire and so there’s a sense of relief.

“I think that’s probably shared in the UK too, where people are very concerned about what they’re seeing on their television screens, very concerned about the impact it might have on them, or that’s my feeling.”
