Chevy Chase recounts health scare in new documentary

Chevy Chase describes a health scare that put him in the hospital for five weeks.
In the documentary “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” premiering Jan. 1 on CNN, the 82-year-old actor and his family, along with his daughter Caley, discuss his hospital stay after a heart condition: “[He] basically came back from the dead” Diversity.
“Something was wrong and he couldn’t explain to me what was wrong. So we went to the emergency room. His heart was in cardiac arrest,” Chase’s wife Jayni said in the documentary. “During his years of drinking, he developed cardiomyopathy when his heart muscles weakened and could not pump as much blood with each beat.”
His long-time friend Peter Aaron also appeared in the documentary, explaining that after suffering a heart condition, doctors “decided to put him in a coma for maybe eight days.”

His daughter explained that doctors then advised the family to “prepare yourselves for the worst,” telling them, “We may not be able to get him back,” and even if they did, “we don’t know how long he’ll be there.”
The actor spent five weeks in hospital in 2021 following health issues, but did not elaborate on the nature of his illness at the time.
“These are my first few days at home. Now I can say how happy I am to be back with my family. I feel good.” he told Page Six In that case. “I’ve been in the hospital for five weeks. A heart problem. So for now, I’m at home. I’m not going anywhere.”
Chase previously discussed his diagnosis of alcohol cardiomyopathy, a condition characterized by weakening of the heart muscle caused by excessive alcohol consumption, when speaking to The Washington Post in 2018.

“This is what heart failure is like,” Chase said in the documentary, adding that he was “fine right now.”
The “National Lampoon’s Vacation” star broke out in Hollywood as one of the original cast members of “Saturday Night Live.” She became the first cast member to leave the show, debuting at the end of the first season in hopes of continuing her music career.
In February, the popular sketch comedy show celebrated its 50th anniversary with a three-hour live special where current and former cast members came together to celebrate some of the show’s most iconic moments. Conspicuously left out of the celebration was Chase, who attended the celebration but didn’t take much part in the scene.
“It was actually kind of sad,” he said in the documentary. “This is probably the first time I’m saying this. But I was hoping that I would be on stage with the other actors. Garrett [Morris] and Laraine [Newman] I went on stage there, wondering why I didn’t go. Nobody asked me for this. Why was I left aside?”

Chase said he reached out to “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels about being ostracized but took it back and used it as a joke. But in reality he felt like “someone made a mistake and they should have put me on that stage.” It hurt.”
