New data shows UK shoppers could save significant amounts on an average basket per week by switching to Aldi. The retail giant, known for its great promotions and prices, has also risen to the top again as YouGov’s Most Popular Supermarket. Department stores in the UK continue to tussle over prices, but new research suggests shoppers could save up to £22 on the average basket by switching to Aldi.
A survey comparing the price of a grocery basket of 33 items in all major supermarkets in the UK, grocery magazineIt crowned Aldi as the cheapest company for the sixth year in a row. Priced at £62.80, Aldi’s hamper was 33.5% cheaper than its priciest rival Waitrose, meaning shoppers could save £22.27 by switching.
In recent months Aldi has cut more than 900 prices across its range and invested more than £300 million in price cuts since the start of 2025.
The comparison survey shows Aldi beat Lidl, which had an average basket price of £63.18, by just 38p.
Asda made price cuts across the country last week, leaving its rivals in third place with £65.68 for a week’s grocery shopping. Asda was 3.7% cheaper than Tesco, 4.7% cheaper than Sainsbury’s and 5.7% cheaper than Morrisons.
The most expensive supermarket was Waitrose, with a basket price of £85.07, 35.5% more expensive than Aldi’s.
Aldi UK Commercial Director Julie Ashfield said: “Shoppers know where to find real value and we’re committed to offering unbeatable prices to our customers every time they shop with us.
“Our focus remains the same: helping customers save money on the products they buy every week. With more than £300 million invested in price reductions since January, we’re ensuring low prices stay not just for now, but for good.”
Aldi’s position as the UK’s best value supermarket has been reaffirmed, while its popularity among British shoppers continues to grow.
The retailer has also regained the top spot in the Most Popular Supermarket rankings, according to YouGov’s quarterly survey data to September 2025. M&S came in a close second, with Tesco Express coming in third.
