Christian Eriksen discharged from hospital and ‘doing well’ after collapse against Ukraine

Christian Eriksen says he is “in good shape” and is at home with his family following the collapse in Sunday’s match against Ukraine.

The 34-year-old man spent the night in the hospital after the incident and wrote: Statement on Instagram, external that “healing has already begun”.

The match in Odense was stopped in the 65th minute when he collapsed and shortly afterwards Eriksen was able to walk off the field after regaining consciousness.

The former Manchester United, Tottenham and Brentford midfielder was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), a type of pacemaker, after suffering a heart attack during a Euro 2020 match against Finland in 2021.

“As you can probably imagine, the shock I received from ICD had a huge impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this is a different situation than what happened in 2021,” Eriksen wrote.

“In addition to being grateful for the support and assistance of all the players on the field and the medical staff, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have taken care of me and my heart over the years.

“Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it.

The ICD allowed Eriksen to continue his playing career at Brentford in 2022, eight months after their Euro collapse, before spending three years at Manchester United.

On Sunday, Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen said “the pacemaker responded as it should.”

“For now, my focus is on recovery, spending time with my family, going on vacation and playing football with my kids,” Eriksen said. he said.

Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of his return in 2022, Eriksen (who currently plays for Wolfsburg) said he had no concerns about playing with an ICD.

“I don’t see any risk, no. I have an ICD, if something happens, I’m safe,” he added.

Neither Denmark nor Ukraine could participate in the World Cup, which starts on Thursday.
