Cody Rhodes beats Gunther after referee misses rope break at WWE Clash in Italy

Controversial officiating is clearly not limited to the NFL or NBA.

The Undisputed WWE Championship match between Cody Rhodes and Gunther, played in Clash, Italy on Sunday, was also shaken by referee Dan Engler’s risky decision.

Rhodes and Gunther were in the middle of the fast-paced end of their match. “American Nightmare” hit Gunther with a second Cross Rhodes, landing Gunther near the ropes. Rhodes pinned Gunther and the referee started counting. On the broadcast, Gunther’s foot appeared to be under the ropes, which should have broken the count.

However, Engler was not looking at Gunther’s legs when he counted Rhodes. The defending champion held Gunther’s shoulders down for the three count, leaving Gunther stunned. “The Ring General” stepped out of the ring and continued to signal to Engler that his foot was under the rope.

As Rhodes celebrated with the crowd at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, Gunther angrily walked up the entrance ramp. Rhodes remained champion and made his second title defense since winning the belt from Drew McIntyre earlier in the month.

Gunther earned his title shot after defeating Royce Keys two weeks ago. He initially refused to sign for the Clash in Italy before Keys passed on the opportunity from him.

Gunther has since reminded Rhodes that he has a habit of making “Friday Night SmackDown” all about himself. But now Gunther has a legitimate complaint about how the title match turned out.
